KUMBAKONAM: The Kumbakonam Municipality has introduced an exclusive bio-waste management system.
Under the system, bio-waste is collected at the doorsteps of hotels, fish, meat and poultry and vegetable markets and disposed of by the municipality.
Those who are covered under the system have to pay Rs.15 per day, according to the Municipal Commissioner, V. P. Dandapani.
There are 160 hotels in Kumbakonam, which generate four tonnes of food waste every day.
The 75 fish, meat and chicken shops dispose 6 to 10 tonnes of waste per day, while vegetable markets produce a waste of 10 tonnes.
Two lorries collect these waste every evening and take it to the waste disposal ground where it is deposited in shallow pits. Cow dung is mixed and the waste is allowed to set for two months, after which it becomes manure, which the municipality proposes to market.
In respect of solid waste produced in houses, collection is done in every ward. Plastic is segregated and other waste are dumped the in compost yard. No plastic waste will go to the compost yard.
“By segregating plastic we now have 200 tonnes of old plastic kept separately,” V.P. Dandapani, said.
