You've planned your weekend getaway down to the very last detail... except for one thing. The trains are booked and the flights overpriced. You are left with one long-distance alternative - the Bus Trip. (shudder). Well, you don't have to dread travelling by bus any longer. Here are 10 tips to help you get through a long bus trip.

1. Check if it's a non-stop bus. Non-stop buses will NOT stop for bathroom breaks except at ungodly hours. If it is, then regardless of what time it is, how many shoes, socks, jackets, blankets, and shawls need to be put on / taken off, however comfortable you are, get out and head for the loo. You will seriously regret missing the opportunity to do this later. 2. If you're travelling as a group, always take a sleeper bus. More privacy, much more comfort. If you're travelling alone, do NOT take a sleeper - you may end up sharing with a complete stranger. Sleepers are almost always 2-bunkers.

3. Carry earplugs. Buses have this misguided idea that they're movie theatres, and there are only two settings for the volume - off and cacophonic.

4. Carry food. Yes, there are food stops, at highly unghygienic, overpriced restaurants, and you cannot afford food poisoning on a long journey. Refer to point 1. Avoid very salty or sweet food; it will make you thirsty, and avoid wet food; it will leak.

5. Drink water, slowly. Stay hydrated. Avoid anything with caffeine - it's diuretic; so no colas or coffee. Some people also avoid all water because of the loo issue, but that's not a good idea - you end up with severe headaches and could fall sick as well.

6. A thick shawl. The AC is super-chilling, drafts blow in from odd corners, and it also serves as a useful method of bundling up into an unidentifiable lump for more anonymity. Remember not to wear jewellery and opt for loose, comfortable clothes and shoes.

7. If travelling alone, try and get a seat next to other women. Especially for overnight trips. Again, safer.

8. The back of the bus is a danger area - the last row is a natural backbencher-congregation point, and sooner or later someone will start spiking their Thums Up during Antakshiri. The front is also easier for getting in & out more easily, and is closer to the conductor for complaining if needed.

9. Charge your phone fully and activate roaming. You may need it in case of any breakdowns. Always leave some charge till the very end; use it sparingly.

10. Use a single large bag to store your phone, your food bag, your camera, your purse, your shawl, your jacket, shades; lots of smaller items are easier to misplace. Make sure the sanitizer, cold cream, small towel, and breath mints are easily reachable.
