Chances of miscarriages go up after 30, too much exercise can be bad news if you're trying to get pregnant and being married to a much older man can also put you at risk! Fertilility specialist Dr Firuza R. Parikh, who has come out with her book The Complete Guide to Getting Pregnant, discusses fertility issues with Anuradha Varma
What prompted you to write the book?
Infertility carries a social stigma. Due to this, many couples shy away from medical treatment. They hesitate to visit an infertility specialist. Sometimes, they waste precious years trying procedures that are not suitable for them and would certainly not help them to conceive. Being an infertility specialist over the last 25 years, I have seen and experienced the suffering and anguish of these couples. There is a very significant need to inform couples who are trying for a baby to have all the facts about their fertility issues. When Chikki Sarkar, who is the Editor-in-Chief of Random House approached me to write a book on this topic, she catalyzed this process.
I wrote this book to let couples know that most forms of infertility are treatable. They have several options to enjoy parenthood. They must make informed choices. Through the book I want to take away the reader's diffidence and replace that with confidence.
What is the role of the husband when his wife is getting fertility treatment?
The husband plays a very important supportive role. We usually insist that he accompany his wife at least during the first few visits. Since it takes two to make a baby, both partners need to share this responsibility.
How much exercise is good for a woman trying to get pregnant and when is it too much?
Exercise should be an integral part of a woman's routine even when she is planning a pregnancy. Aerobics, swimming, walking, jogging, yoga, pilates and weights are all permitted. However, women must not resort to crash diets or exercise to the point of exhaustion. Exercise, combined with adequate sleep and attention to good nutrition, is helpful. Women can stop menstruating if they lose excess body fat. Several studies have shown that significant weight loss can stop not only ovulation but also a woman's periods and cause infertility.
What are some must-have foods for a woman trying to get pregnant and what must be avoided? You have mentioned the benefits of folic acid.
A balanced diet with enough greens and proteins is necessary. Folic acid plays a role in preventing miscarriage and birth defects and hence should be started a few months prior to planning a baby.
We are all exposed to environmental toxins. These are present in pesticides, weedicides and even in our drinking water and the air we breathe. Many of these can cause generate Reactive Oxygen Species. These are free radicals which cause cell damage and early aging. Addition of antioxidants provided by nature or those obtained through medicines neutralise the free radicals and enhance the chances of pregnancy. Some of the antioxidants are Vitamin C, Zinc, carotene, Arginine and Lycopene. Many fruits and vegetables are a rich source of these.
